Why did my email bounce back with an error message? Print

When an email bounces back, it means it couldn't be delivered to the recipient and was returned to you with an error message. This usually includes a brief explanation of what went wrong.

Common reasons for bounced emails:

  • Invalid email address – the recipient address doesn’t exist or was typed incorrectly.
  • Mailbox full – the recipient’s inbox is full and can't accept new messages.
  • Blocked or blacklisted – your message was rejected due to spam filters or blacklisting.
  • Server issues – the recipient's mail server is temporarily unavailable or misconfigured.
  • Attachment size too large – your email exceeds the recipient’s size limit.

What should I do?

  • Read the error message – it often includes a code (e.g. 550, 552) and explanation.
  • Check the recipient’s email address – look for typos.
  • Try again later – if it’s a temporary issue like a full inbox.
  • Open a new ticket if you're unsure what the message means or suspect server issues.
